Introduction
I’ve been an avid bass fisherman for years, but it wasn’t until I started using the Neko Rig that I truly started catching bass in every season. Whether it’s winter, pre-spawn, spawn, post-spawn, summer or fall, the Neko Rig has proven to be a highly effective tool for catching bass. In this article, I’m going to share with you why the Neko Rig is such a great option for year-round bass fishing, as well as some specific techniques and baits that work well in each season.
Winter Neko Rig Fishing
Winter fishing can be tough – the colder water temperatures slow down the bass’s metabolism, making them less active and harder to catch. However, with the right approach, you can still catch them – and that’s where the Neko Rig comes in. One of the biggest benefits of the Neko Rig is that it allows you to fish slowly and subtly, which is perfect for winter fishing.
One of my favorite Neko Rig baits to use in the winter is a small finesse worm, rigged on a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce Neko weight. I like to fish this bait very slowly, twitching it gently along the bottom. Since bass are less active in the winter, they often won’t chase after a bait that’s moving too quickly – but they will take their time to inspect a slow-moving, tantalizing bait.
Pre-Spawn Neko Rig Fishing
As the water begins to warm up in the pre-spawn season, bass start to become more active and move towards the shallows in preparation for spawning. This is one of the best times to target bigger bass, and the Neko Rig is a great tool for doing so.
When fishing the Neko Rig in the pre-spawn, one of my go-to baits is a soft plastic stick bait. Rigged on a Neko hook with a Neko weight, this bait can be fished slowly, allowing you to tempt those pre-spawn bass with a subtle presentation. I like to fish this bait along the edges of weed lines or around structure, where the bigger bass tend to hang out.
Spawn Neko Rig Fishing
During the spawn season, bass become focused on one goal: spawning. This makes them more predictable and easier to catch – and the Neko Rig can be especially effective during this time. One of the best techniques for using the Neko Rig during the spawn is to fish it weightless, so that it sinks slowly as it drifts towards the bottom.
For baits, I like to use smaller soft plastic worms or creature baits, rigged on a Neko hook. These baits imitate the small creatures that bass feed on during this time, making them irresistible to spawning bass. I like to fish these baits around beds and other shallow structures, where the bass are actively spawning.
Post-Spawn Neko Rig Fishing
After the spawn, bass go through a period of recovery where they are less active and less likely to bite. However, if you’re patient and fish the right baits, you can still catch them – and the Neko Rig is a great tool for doing so. During the post-spawn season, I like to use finesse worms or creature baits rigged on a Neko hook with a small weight.
As with winter fishing, the key to success during the post-spawn is to fish slow and subtle. Bass are still recovering from the rigors of the spawning process, so they won’t chase after a bait that’s moving too quickly. That’s why the Neko Rig is so effective – it allows you to fish slowly and tempt those post-spawn bass into biting.
Summer Neko Rig Fishing
Summer can be a challenging time to catch bass, as the warmer water temperatures make them more active and more likely to chase after faster-moving baits. However, the Neko Rig can still be effective during this time – you just have to adjust your approach. When fishing the Neko Rig in the summer, I like to use bigger, bulkier baits like creature baits or craws.
These baits are more likely to grab a bass’s attention and entice them into biting. However, I still fish these baits slower than I would during other seasons – I want to give the bass a chance to inspect and strike at the bait before it gets away.
Fall Neko Rig Fishing
During the fall, bass start to prepare for the winter months by feeding heavily and putting on weight. This makes them more likely to bite, but it also means that they are more selective about the baits they go after. To catch fall bass with the Neko Rig, I like to use a finesse worm or a small creature bait, rigged on a Neko hook with a small weight.
Since the bass are feeding heavily during this time, you can fish the baits a bit faster than you would during other seasons. However, it’s still important to keep the presentation subtle and natural-looking – that’s what makes the Neko Rig so effective.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Neko Rig is a highly versatile and effective tool for catching bass in every season. Whether you’re fishing in winter, pre-spawn, spawn, post-spawn, summer or fall, the Neko Rig can be a game-changer for your fishing game. By fishing slow, subtle, and using the right baits, you can consistently catch bass throughout the year. So if you haven’t tried the Neko Rig yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot – you might be surprised at just how effective it can be.
